I've always loved silhouettes, and I couldn't be more thrilled about the fact that they seem to be everywhere lately. I decided to try my own take on a silhouette art as a means to "capture" my kids as they are right now. I love the way they turned out! No, you don't need to be an artist to make one of these. In fact, it's really all about tracing! So yes, these silhouettes are super easy! I put mine in a frame, but I think they'd be great to make into a necklace, key chain, or even an ornament. So add this project to your Christmas list!
Let's get started!
I used a tablet, stylus, and an art app, however you can replicate these results with a low tech option. Just print out a photograph and trace!
Here's what I did though:
All I did was take a side view picture of my kids with my Ipad. Then I opened it in my favorite drawing app(which allows you to create multiple layers, including a photo layer.) I created a new layer on top of the photo, and began tracing my daughters' faces.
See how easy it is? I just used my stylus to trace my daughter's hair and face. Don't have a stylus? You can just use your finger.
Once I finished tracing, I deleted the photo layer and added some flowers:
I printed them out:
and put them in frames on my nightstand.
All in all it was a simple project, but I think it's so fun to be able to capture my kids at this stage in their lives. I even played around with some other pictures--including some of my wedding. I think the flowers add a nice bit of color to the black and white "pencil". What do you think? Do you think it's a project you'd like to attempt?
What a great idea! Thanks for the creative push.
ReplyDeleteVivi would like one for Xmas, auntie Jill. :-)
ReplyDeleteThose are adorable, what a fun way to capture your children's likeness. They aren't, however, silhouettes. Silhouettes only show the detail and likeness around the perimeter and are usually black.
ReplyDeleteVery true, Jill. Outline is probably a better word to describe them. I went with "silhouette" mainly because I was inspired to make these from the traditional silhouettes....I started out with just a little bit of detail but I couldn't help making more! :-)
